Who the hell was she kidding? There was no way she could go through with this! Lucy made it to the back door of Hugh’s private quarters before her bravado gave out and she almost crumpled into a blubbering mess. This was so stupid! Real people didn’t dress up in a Driza-Bone and red high heels, for God’s sake, and then invite themselves over to their boss’s house to seduce him. Holy crap, it sounded worse than a B-grade movie plot. Just knock on the door, damn it! said Nicole’s voice in her head. She knew she was quite possibly losing her mind, but somehow her fist was banging on the door and she was left there gulping in lungfuls of air and feeling as though she might actually hyperventilate.
As the sounds of boots approaching the doorway grew louder, Lucy found herself preparing to flee, but then the door was opened and she was trapped in the bright glow of light from inside, like the proverbial deer caught in the headlights.
‘Lucy?’
It was now or never, she thought, taking a breath. She stepped around him and headed inside. There was no turning back now. If she looked at him or even listened to him calling her, she’d lose what little nerve remained.
She fumbled slightly with the knot she’d tied before leaving the house, but she hadn’t counted on nerves making her fingers turn into thumbs and ruin her graceful seduction. I’m not going to cry, she thought firmly, even though she felt like throwing her hands in the air and stomping her feet. Just breathe. She’d finally gotten the knot undone when she came to an abrupt halt in the centre of the lounge room and looked up to see the three stunned faces of Jason, Terry the cook and the beer delivery guy gaping at her.
This could not be happening. She vaguely heard Hugh arrive behind her and his low groan that followed. She couldn’t move, she was frozen in mortified shock. This wasn’t supposed to be happening. She’d managed to pick an after-work wind down to make her grand debut as a stripper? The delivery guy was leaning so far forward he was barely still sitting on the couch. Terry was so stunned that he dropped his beer can and the sound of tin rolling across the timber floorboards snapped everyone out of the stupefied trance they’d somehow fallen into. Lucy opened her mouth to scream, but all that came out was a pathetic mortified gasp of horror as she frantically pulled the coat closed and turned to hurry from the room.
‘Lucy, wait!’ Hugh called from behind her, catching her at the front door.
‘Kill me now,’ she whispered, refusing to look him in the eye.
‘I can’t believe you did this.’
She was too mortified to register the impressed pride in his tone right away. ‘You can’t believe I did it? You were the one who put the stupid idea in my head in the first place,’ she said in a low whisper.
